Good Faith Estimate (GFE)

You have the right to receive a "Good Faith Estimate" that clarifies the expected cost of your medical care.

By law, healthcare providers are required to provide patients without insurance or those not using insurance with an estimate of the charges for medical items and services.

  • You can request a Good Faith Estimate for the total anticipated expenses of non-emergency medical items or services, which includes associated costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

  • Your healthcare provider must furnish you with a written Good Faith Estimate at least one business day before your scheduled medical service or item. You can also request this estimate from your healthcare provider or any other provider you select before scheduling an item or service.

  • If you receive a bill that exceeds your Good Faith Estimate by at least $400, you have the right to challenge the bill.

  • It's important to keep a copy or photo of your Good Faith Estimate for reference.
